World-class athletes will fill the Belgrade Athletic Hall at Banjica on February 11, when the Belgrade Indoor Meeting will be held for the 11th consecutive year. Fans can expect a unique athletics spectacle, as alongside international stars of the “queen of sports,” Serbia’s top athletes will also showcase their skill and strength on the competition field.
Once again competing in front of her home crowd will be the world-renowned and Serbia’s own, one of a kind Ivana Španović, who will open her new season at the Belgrade Indoor Meeting and set her sights on new heights.
“It is always a pleasure to compete in front of your home crowd and your own people. For ten years now, Belgrade has hosted the biggest names in world athletics, who enjoy the hospitality and support of the athletics fans, and in return deliver outstanding sporting spectacles,” Španović said.
The Serbian national team member in the long jump and triple jump will this time compete in the triple jump discipline under the roof of the Belgrade Athletic Hall.
“It goes without saying that I have also been inspired by such an atmosphere and environment, where I achieved some of the biggest results of my career. This time, I am competing in a different discipline, with the same enjoyment, as part of my preparations for the major competitions that await us this season,” emphasized the Serbian athletics star.
The Belgrade Indoor Meeting is one of only eight meetings worldwide holding “gold” status in the World Athletics calendar, and the Serbian Athletics Federation is proud to once again host one of the highest-quality indoor competitions on the global stage.
“My goal in Belgrade is primarily to achieve the qualifying standard of 14.15 meters for the World Championships, and then to continue progressing in terms of results and technical consistency toward the greater distances I am striving for,” Španović concluded.
The Gold Series consists of eight meetings — Boston and New York in the USA, Karlsruhe, Liévin, Toruń, Ostrava, Madrid and Belgrade — with the highlight of the season being the World Indoor Championships in Toruń, from March 20 to 22.
Throughout her illustrious career, Ivana Španović has written the history of Serbian athletics, winning a total of 15 major medals (8 gold, 2 silver and 5 bronze) at the most prestigious international competitions — seven at European Championships, seven at World Championships and one Olympic medal — establishing herself as one of the most decorated and successful athletes in the history of Serbian sport.
